Introduction

Sonar is commonly used for navigational system in submarine to detect or communicate with another object underwater. Sonar equipment emits pulse of sounds and listens to the echo to determine location and measurement of underwater objects.

Besides for navigational system, sonar is used in many different applications, including fishing for examples the iBobber Smart Fishfinder and the Deeper Wireless Sonar Smart Fish Finder. Both are sonar-equipped bobbers that help fisherman to map the counter of water bed and notice if there are fish in the area.

iBobber Smart Fishfinder

iBobber Castable Bluetooth Smart FishfinderAt a glance iBobber Castable Bluetooth Smart Fishfinder looks like any regular bobber measuring at 2.3 inches in diameter with 1.7 ounces of weight. You can attach it to a fishing line and cast it as usual. The iBobber automatically turns on and activates its sonar as it comes to contact with water.

On its own, this device cannot give any useful information, but you can pair it with a compatible smartphone and use the companion app to map waterbed, measure depth, water temperature, and see if there are fish in the area.

Equipped with 118kHz transducer, the iBobber is able to measure up to 135 feet of depth and transmit the pulse of sound to cover about 42 degree angle. In total, the sonar has maximum coverage of 234 feet in diameter.

Once the fishing line is cast, all data are fed to the paired smartphone. The iBobber connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth Smart and maintains connectivity with the paired device to 100 feet away. It is compatible with Android (4.0 or up) and iOS (6.0, 7.0, 7.1, or up) devices.

It has IP67 protection rating, and you can even use it for ice fishing. The companion app is free, and it gives more than enough data for any fishing treat. It is powered by a rechargeable 3.7V battery with standby time of weeks or up to 10 hours of continuous usage.

To map the contour of waterbed, you have to cast the fishing line with iBobber attached and select the Waterbed Mapping function on the app. Reel in slowly to give time for the sonar to work at reasonable pace, and tap the smartphone screen to stop.

As long as you get good connectivity, it does not matter if you cast and reel-in from boat, shore, or dock. The main screen of the app gives an animated display of depth, waterbed, and fish. On the left hand side is a simple ruler to represent depth; any fish that passes by the sonar detection range is represented by simple yet clear animation respective to depth.

Every fish is tagged with depth indicator as well. The iBobber gives two different fish sizes; fish tagged with orange depth indicator is 15-inch or under, while green depth tag means the fish is larger than 15-inch. Other features include:

  • Trip log: you can save your current location by giving GPS tag for future reference.
  • Social media: upload and share pictures to social media.
  • Temperature: the iBobber has built-in temperature and it feeds the data to your smartphone.
  • Fish alarm: the device notifies you anytime you catch a fish
  • Strike alarm: a sensitive alarm also notices when a fish is taking a bite.
  • LED: a beacon makes it visible in the dark, ideal for night fishing.

Deeper Wireless Sonar Smart Fish Finder

Deeper DP0H10S10-P Wireless Sonar Smart Fish FinderMeasuring at 2.6 inches in diameter and weighing at 3.5 ounces, the Deeper Wireless Sonar Smart Fish Finder comes with dual-frequency transducer (90/290 kHz)), so it should be more capable of providing accurate observation. Sonar sensitivity can be adjusted; using the 90 kHz frequency, sonar coverage reaches up to 55 degree angle, and it reduces to about 15 degree when using the 290 kHz frequency.

Maximum observable depth is 130 feet, but it pairs with your smartphone from up to 160 feet away. It is currently compatible with more than 7000 models of iOS and Android devices.

The companion app provides myriads of features including lunar fishing calendar, weather reports, map function, fishing log, social media integration, camera, sonar frequency, multiple language interface, and of course fish icons.

Deeper Wireless is powered by a rechargeable 3.7V to provide up to 6 hours of running time. You can put the device to low-power consumption mode to preserve battery life.
