While your chest-strap HRMs (Heart Rate Monitors) may work just fine without any problem, a new variant has now arrived, leaving behind the long strap and replace it with an armband instead.

The Scosche Rhythm+ Heart Rate Monitor can be a good candidate in case you want to upgrade your current HRM not only to the new design but also to better compatibility feature with both Bluetooth and ANT+ devices.

The idea behind the armband is that it can read your heart rate via optical sensors on the back of the device through your skin. The Rhythm+ is actually a successor of the previously released Rhythm (without the +).

The omission of chest strap is one of the main highlights. The actual improvement is in the connectivity feature that Rhythm+ can transmit to both Bluetooth-enabled and ANT+ device concurrently.

Since this HRM uses the heart rate device profile, it does not need anything else to connect. Every standard device that supports heart rate data can be paired easily. Compatibility will include many sport watches, activity trackers, and smartphones.

Another improvement is the use of green LED sensor as addition to the more common green LED for more accurate heart rate reading.

Connectivity to smartphones is via Bluetooth. As long as you use a Bluetooth Smart enabled smartphone, you can connect it to Rhythm+, meaning any iPhone (4s or later) and Android (4.3 or later) is compatible.

In this case, you need an app (any app that supports Bluetooth Smart sensor) installed on your smartphone, but there are hundreds of apps with such feature so it should be easy to find one.

According to Scosche, Rhythm+ is compatible with more than 200 popular apps available from Play Store and App Store.

Connectivity range is also good that it can be at 100 feet away from your smartphone without losing connection. This means you don’t have to carry your smartphone all the time, especially during indoor training such as in the gym.

Rhythm+ is IP67-rated to make sure it gets accurate measurement even when you submerge it to 1 meter underwater.

Unlike most HRM-enabled watches, the Rhythm+ has green and yellow optical sensors. There are three LEDs on the back of the device; two of them are green and the other is yellow.

According to Scosche’s engineers, the addition of yellow LED delivers better reading on those with darker screens. This small device is powered by a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 8 hours of continuous use on a single charge.

Pairing with Smartphone

To connect it to your smartphone all you need to do is push a button on the front of Rhythm+. In fact, it only has one button. You should see the light indicator flashes red and blue.

When it is successfully paired with Bluetooth, the blue light blinks three times. When connected via ANT+, red light blinks three times as well.

When you see purple light, this means the device working properly. The box brings 4 items including Rhythm+ heart rate monitor that is attached to a small strap, an extra strap (a larger one to be used on upper arm), a charging cradle, and manual instruction. Each armband is secured to the main unit and your arm by Velcro.
