Myo Gesture Control Armband can be paired to a computer via Bluetooth and it will control a computer application by hand gestures. Developed by Thalmic Labs, Myo is a revolutionary way to register gesture commands.

In most devices, gesture control system basically takes advantage of touchscreen. More advanced technology uses camera, but it is still prone to interference from poor lighting condition, physical obstruction, and distance.

Several different hand gestures can be registered including spreading hand, squeezing fist, waving left, waving right, rotating fist, and pinching finger or thumb.

Myo is also equipped with three-axis gyroscope, three-axis magnetometer, and three-axis accelerometer to detect arm movement in any direction.

This armband does not have power button; it turns on as soon as you pick it up and turns off automatically soon after going idle. Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion, Myo can run for up to a day (14 hours) of continuous use. In standby mode, fully-recharged Myo can preserve battery life for about a week.

How It Works

Communication between Myo and a connected device can only happen via Bluetooth LE. Myo Connect app needs to be installed on your Mac or Windows computer to control an active application.

For first time usage, you need to perform a calibration to avoid gesture reading error. In order to read arm activities, Myo has eight different blocks wrapping around your arm.

Any arm motion and muscle activity is processed by the onboard processor, an ARM Cortex M4, which will send commands based on gestures to a connected computer or device.

In case your computer does not have Bluetooth connectivity option, Myo is packaged with a Bluetooth dongle that you can plug into a USB port.

You also need to download “connector” application from the Myo Market. There is a good assortment of connectors provided in the market with good compatibility features with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad.

There are connectors for major applications for examples Microsoft PowerPoint, Windows Media Player, iTunes, music player on Android/iPhone/iPad device, and more. There is even a connector app to pair Myo with a Parrot AR Drone.

In addition to gesture-based commands and connectors apps to control application, Myo features a Keyboard Mapper utility. It allows you to register different gestures to assign commands to mouse clicks and keyboard key/keys combination.

This means you can control any active application on your computer, even when the connector app is not currently available on Myo Market. When Keyboard Mapper is active, the registered gesture works globally on the computer.

Myo Gesture Control Armband has LED lights as indicators for many things to let you know if the unit is connected, warming up, ready to use, in need of power recharge, updating firmware, experiencing any error, and more.

This device is currently compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. As long as the device supports Bluetooth Smart, chances are you can pair it with Myo. The included Bluetooth adapter also makes sure you can use it with PCs made by different manufacturers.
