Introduction

An automatic vacuum cleaner has more or less the same idea of robotic pool cleaner, an appliance that predates app-centric platforms as we see today in modern homes. This appliance is smart in the sense that it is able to clean the entire floor of an area in your home without bumping into furniture pieces or falling off the stairs thanks to a number of adaptive sensors.

Neato and iRobot are prominent names in automatic vacuum cleaners industry. Both have been in the market for many years, delivering quality products to keep up with the more rapidly developing manifestations of app-controlled residence in modern home-networking world.

Neato with its Botvac Connected and iRobot with its Roomba 980 are direct competitors. Each is Wi-Fi enabled for app control, easy to use and has mapping system to analyze the room.

iRobot Roomba 980

roomba 980
Roomba 980

iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest and most advanced version from the company to date, featuring Wi-Fi connectivity .

In many respects, Roomba 980 is similar to its predecessor, the Roomba 880. It is a circular automatic vacuum cleaner at 13.8-inch in diameter and 3.6-inch high. As mentioned earlier, the height matters; a 0.3-inch difference in height may not seem much, but it can be a big difference between slithering unobtrusively on the floor and bumping into chair legs repeatedly.

Roomba 980 has three buttons; a large Clean button is sitting at the top, while the smaller Spot and Home buttons are on its right and left sides. Clean button also functions as power key, so you press it once to turn on the robot, and once again to start cleaning.

Pressing the Home button commands the robotic cleaning to return to its docking station, recharge, and standby for the next instruction. As the name suggests, Spot cleaning is useful when you need to clean dirt and stain in any specific area only.

A row of lights above the Clean button acts as indicators for Wi-Fi status, Troubleshooting (which means something is wrong and it requires troubleshooting), battery, and full bin. There is also Dirt Detect indicator to tell you that the robot has found intense-debris spot. Troubleshooting indicator is accompanied by an error number of which the reference can be found in the companion app.

Roomba 980 is packaged with an assortment of accessories including charging station, a spare filter, an extra side brush, and two Virtual Wall Barriers. iRobot provides more sophisticated barrier devices with which you can set any custom border to prevent this robot from wandering to unwanted areas in your home. Virtual Wall Barriers double as Geofence devices to create a restricted zone of several diameters.

It does not come with a physical remote control, but you can always use your Android or iOS device. Thanks to home network connectivity, it is possible to send command to the robot even when you are not at home using your smartphone. Roomba 980 has a feature called Carpet Boost which automatically increases suction power when cleaning carpet area.

The idea is that dirt and dust hide in the carpet and they require more suction power to clean. Boost mode can be used on carpet area only or the entire floor if needs be. Another option is a single run or two cleaning passes.

Roomba 980 has scheduling option, and better than anything, automatic recharging between cleaning. When it runs out of battery power in the middle of the job, it can automatically return to its charging station and resume working when fully charged. It removes the needs for continuous checking, so it’s a handy feature when you clean your home from far away location using the app.

Neato Botvac™ Connected

Neato Botvac ConnectedUnlike the more mainstream circular shape of automatic vacuum cleaner, the Neato Botvac Connected has a D-shaped body. Only the back part of the appliance is curved, allowing it to get into tight corners with ease. An exhaust vent and charging port are located in this curved part.

The overall dimension measures at 3.9-inch H x 12.7-inch W x 13.2-inch D. For a vacuum cleaner, the height matters because it is intended to slither through the floor underneath chair, couch, TV stands, and table, so you will want it to be as low as possible. In the front, there is a handle to grab when you want to pick it up. Control panel is on the top of the robotic cleaner, consisting of LCD screen, four buttons for programming, and two other buttons for Spot Cleaning and Start/Pause.

LCD panel is quite small at only 1.7-inch square but it conveys valuable information such as indicators for battery life, active cleaning mode, and Wi-Fi. There are only two cleaning modes in the Neato Connected including Eco and Turbo. The former is the standard option with normal suction power thus it takes longer to cover a cleaning area, while the latter delivers a more powerful power for quicker cleaning.

Both Spot Clean and Home buttons also function as indicators to inform you whether or not the battery is fully charged. The programmable buttons located near the LCD screen are used for programming and accessing settings when you don’t use the robotic vacuum with its companion app.

The bottom of the Neato Connected is home to many different parts including brush/blade combo, two drop sensors (each on its rear right and left sides) to prevent it from falling of the stairs, a set of wheels, spinning side brush, brush guard, and battery compartment.

Neato Connected automatic vacuum cleaner is packaged with some spare accessories such as blade roller, filter, and boundary marker. Instead of using electric area marker, Neato uses the more conventional 80-inch long magnetic tape that you can cut into any length to set custom borders. Physical remote control is omitted, but you can use your smartphone to replace it.

Introduction

Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner by iRobot has been around for 14 years now, and one of the latest iterations is the Roomba 980. Equipped with an array of sensors to help you vacuum dirt and debris from the floor, this robotic cleaner is now enhanced with additions of camera and more sophisticated localization technology to maneuver and avoid obstacles.

Roomba 980

Coming with the ability to automatically determine the most efficient cleaning pattern and a set of sensors for better adaptation to every home, Roomba 980 promises to deliver more thorough cleaning and intelligent mapping technology in real-world circumstances, not only in controlled factory laboratory during testing.

The robotic cleaner is also the first from iRobot to come with vSLAM or visual simultaneous localization and mapping. Taking advantage of floor sensor and on-board camera, it can map locations using visual landmarks as points of references.

Based on the map, it avoids obstacles and remembers where it has been, preventing repetitive inefficient cleaning pattern. Instead of making random predictions to determine directional pattern, the adaptive technology allows the cleaner to move in straight yet seemingly intelligent lines. Along its route, the robot will steer itself away from obstacles rather than bumping into them and then change direction.

Thanks to the automatic mapping, cleaning the floor may not require any action on your part at all, except pressing a button. If the robot does not finish the job due to low-battery, it will travel back to its charging dock and continue its unfinished task as soon as it is recharged.

Apart from all the sophisticated sensor-based applications, Roomba 980 still uses the proven reliable AeroForce extractors, made up from two counter-rotating rubber brushes that direct debris and air flow into large trash bin. Everything goes through a removable HEPA filter. The unconventional rubber brushes design makes minimum contact with floor surface, so they work with any floor material.

There is another sensor that detects carpet surface and increases power of up to 10 times stronger than in default state. On other types of floor surface, too much power for vacuuming will generate noise as well, and the addition of this carpet boost is thoughtful engineering.

Roomba 980 has finally brought something that makes it belong to the paradigm of smart home, WiFi support and a companion app. One of the most practical functions of the app is as remote control. However, the app makes the controlling scheme more user-friendly.

Scheduling is also configurable within the app. The previous version of Roomba brought scheduling feature too, but the schedule is configured using buttons on the unit. And with the release of Roomba 980, now that every setting is accessible from the app, there is a sense of uniformity with the entire smart home appliances.

Roomba 980 is packaged with battery power of 40%. Although iRobot suggests that you should charge it first for optimum performance during first run, you can immediately start the robot and see how it performs. To configure WiFi connectivity, you must download the app to your Android or iOS devices. Roomba 980 has its own network, but connecting it to your phone is a simple setup wizard affair. The robot will work whether or not you use the WiFi feature.

Similar to previous Roombas, the 980 is packaged with dual virtual wall barriers. These are small devices powered by AA batteries to help you set boundaries on doors or room spacers, preventing the robot from passing them. Wall barriers also functions as lighthouse to give Roomba a navigation point, allowing it to move from one room to another.

To set barrier around more specific object, these wall barriers have Halo mode which sets circular virtual wall around the object to prevent Roomba from bumping into it. iRobot suggests that Virtual Halo mode works on non-metal bowls up to 3.5-inch tall and less than 10-inch in diameter.

Roomba 880

Many features of Roomba 980 are built on its predecessor’s, Roomba 880. In terms of basic cleaning capabilities, both are alike, but the successor has undergone major improvements in sensor department and connectivity.

There are more buttons on the Roomba 880, which are necessary since you have to configure scheduling on the unit. More major differences come from automatic recharging feature. Roomba 880 does not travel back to its charging dock, recharge itself, and continue working on unfinished cleaning job.

It has the same big round button right in the center of the unit. However, since you cannot control Roomba 880 from an app, it has several buttons including Dock, Clock, Spot, and Schedule. Pressing the Dock button will command the unit to travel back to the charging base, while Clock button gives access to time setting including day, hour, and minute.

To schedule a cleaning routine for a week, press the Schedule button to see the option. The most interesting one is Spot button, which gives an interesting target-cleaning feature. When activated, Roomba 880 will move or rotate to cover about 3 feet diameter from the starting point and returns back.

You don’t have the luxury to control those from an app, but this robotic cleaner is packaged with a simple remote control to send commands from distance. Directional buttons are on the top to steer Roomba 880 to go left, right, and forward. Three more buttons are available to access Clean, Spot, and Dock functions.

There is no schedule button on the remote; as mentioned earlier, you need to configure this directly on the unit. Apart from those and despite the absence of vSLAM technology, Roomba 880 is very capable automatic robot floor cleaner equipped with AeroForce extractors, full debris bin indicator, wall barriers, remote control, and extended battery life.

Introduction

The iRobot Roomba 770 and Roomba 880 are types of vacuum cleaning robots. They are made of automated cleaning technology that allows them to operate freely or with minimal human supervision.

The two models are similar in terms of specifications and capabilities. However, they differ in some aspects. We shall look at the two and their specifications.

iRobot Roomba 770

This particular model is designed with the ability to clean multiple surfaces, including tile, linoleum, wood, carpet, and so forth. This stems from its capability to adjust cleaning settings to various surfaces.

The sensors on the machine are enabled with sensing of surface technology. This allows quick switching and adapting of settings when moving from one surface to another.

However, the sensors do not work well on dark colored flooring, hence, the time taken to clean the surface may be longer.

The iRoomba 770 has three main cleaning modes: the spot mode, cleaning mode, and scheduled cleaning mode. Spot mode is the robot vacuum’s capability to clean in spirals in a 1 meter diameter distance. This localized motion movement allows the robot cleaner to clean small spaces in a short time.

Cleaning mode is designed to calculate room size and adjust the cleaning time accordingly. For the scheduled cleaning mode, the machine is enabled to return to its recharge home base after cleaning a designated area.

Anti-tangle Mechanism

The iRobot Roomba 770 is equipped with the anti-tangle mechanism. This is a designated mechanism to untangle and work through fringes and tassels on carpets.

The sensors enable a recognition within the machine and trigger automatic stopping of the machine and reverse away from the sensed fringe.

Virtual Walls Capability

Additionally, it is equipped with the Virtual Walls capability. This mechanism enables the owner to set virtual boundaries to the machine. With this, the owner can contain the machine to a particular room that needs to be cleaned. By setting up the sensors between designated doorways, the machine will sense the barrier and return within the set room.

iRobot Roomba 880

The Roomba 880 model is equipped with similar technologies as the 770 model, however, there are some differences. In addition to Virtual Walls and the three different cleaning mechanisms, the 880 model has tangle-free AeroForce Extractors, airflow accelerator, high efficiency vacuum, and iAdapt technology.

Aeroforce extractors in this model are designed extractors to break down dirt and debris from various flooring surfaces. This enables the machine to conduct thorough cleaning.

Airflow accelerators are channels created to concentrate airflow which in turn draws in more debris from the floor. The vacuum is five times more powerful than other Roomba generations of robot floor cleaners.

For multiple cleaning run through to ensure thorough cleaning, there is the persistent cleaning pass method which employs a back and forth cleaning motion in the area being cleaned.

iAdapt technology

iAdapt technology is integrated adaptive and responsive navigation technology. Through the advanced system of sensors and software, the machine model is able to navigate accurately within an environment and avoid cliffs, stairs, and furniture damage.

Additionally, the iAdapt is calibrated to find dirt and concentrated buildups using optical and acoustic sensors. The response after locating these sections is concentrated cleaning, powered by the sensors.

Introduction

The iRobot Braava 320 and Braava 380t are robot floor cleaners with automated cleaning mechanisms. Both models are products of the iRobot company.

Being relatively new in terms of technology, there are some things and features to look at. These models, coming from the same company, have some features that are similar in terms of technology included and some differences.

The iRobot Braava 320

The 320 model is made to work on hard floor surfaces. These include tiles, laminates, hardwood, linoleum, and other makes of hard materials.

With a dual cleaning mode of dry and damp, it is the reason why they work great on hard surfaces. The dry mode is made to get rid of dust and other particles while the damp mode with microfibers is made to clear the surface and give it a shine.

Another key technology with this model is smart mapping. This feature allows the robot mop to methodically navigate and clean spaces. This technology also ensures multiple run overs in the designated space to ensure thorough cleaning.

With special sensors, it is able to avoid carpets, pitfalls, and stairs. This along with the compact size of the model of the robot cleaner are prefered by users due to ease of use and ease of storage.

Also equipped with replaceable cleaning cloth capability which allows replacement of old and used cloth with new and clean ones. This is for the user’s ease of use. This model is quiet during their cleaning run through, producing negligible amounts of noise.

With a powerful battery, this model can run up to 3 hours after a single charge. It is equipped with the ability to turn itself off upon completion of cleaning and requires little maintenance of the bins in terms of emptying the bin and changing filters.

The iRobot Braava 380t

The 380t model is equipped with two cleaning features: sweeping and mopping. The dry option is made to capture dirt and particles while the damp is designed to shine the floor.

Smart mapping is also integrated within the machine to enable it to avoid stairs and other surfaces such as carpeting. The two alternating modes can be activated either separately or together.

Users can choose whether to only sweep the surface, mop it, or sweep then mop. Weighing only 4 pounds, it is fit for storage in small spaces.

The 380t is able to cover more ground in one session and requires minimal supervision. This allows it to be more energy efficient and work faster.

With the accurate navigation system, it can work around rounded corners as well sharp corners while still avoiding running into furniture. This also enables the robot mop to go over the cleaned surface twice.

The 380t comes with a more capable charger, able to recharge the robot mop in just 2 hours. The 380t is also more capable of covering more distance in a longer time, given its running time of 2.5 hours.

The 380t has a highly capable battery power. The model is simple to operate, with only three operating function buttons for sweep mode, mop mode and power mode.

Introduction

Robot vacuums have been around for while, but the basic design remains the same. They have rotating brushes, top-mounted buttons, dirt container, and corner brushes.

Many of them look similar to each other from the outside, but the software that runs under the hood set the differences. Regarded as robots, those automatic vacuum cleaners feature room-mapping capability which is similar to robotic pool cleaner to some extent.

Each manufacturer also has specific behavior algorithm to control the robots’ movements. The iRobot is a popular brand in the market with at least two products including Roomba 650 and the more advanced Roomba 770.

Roomba 650

This robotic vacuum cleaner brings almost all basic features or the bare minimum to do an automatic cleaning job in home. Roomba 650 is a circular robot with control buttons mounted on the top, and some sensors to detect dirty spots, avoid stairs, and automatic return to its base for recharging.

The robot measures at 13.39-inch in diameter and 3.62-inch in height; it weighs 7.9 lbs. It also looks good in black color and a yellow ring surrounding the center-located control buttons.

Roomba 650 is powered by a rechargeable battery that lasts for hundreds of cleaning cycle. However, it needs to be recharged for 16 hours before initial use for optimum performance.

There is a big Clean button located in the center of the unit. Once you press it, the robot will automatically work to clean the room. A spinning 3-legged brush is working to scrub dirt and push them into two inner brushes.

Dirt will go through those inner brushes and eventually end up in a dirt bin. These two inner brushes rotate in different directions to maximize air flows and push the debris into the bin.

Roomba 650 has an iAdapt feature that guides the robot to map the room and go under difficult areas including under the bed and furniture. The robot moves effortlessly on carpet or rug as well as on laminate, hardwood, tile, and even across loose wires.

An acoustic sensor is equipped to allow the robot to detect dirtiest area in the room and spend more time to clean the spot. The package includes an Auto Virtual Wall that creates invisible boundaries to prevent the robot from moving from one room to another before its job is done.

Both Auto Virtual Wall and the Home Base emit infrared to help the main unit to locate them. Roomba 650 can automatically return to home base between cleanings for recharging. Other features include cleaning schedule up to 7 cleanings a week and sensor to avoid stair.

Roomba 770

The more expensive Roomba 770 has all the features of Roomba 650 and some improvements in terms of air filters and dirt detection. Roomba 770 measures at 13.9-inch in diameter and 3.6-inch in height, so the dimension is almost the same but it weighs 8.4 lbs. There is also a full-bin indicator located on the top panel.

Instead of using only acoustic sensor to detect the dirtiest spot in your house, Roomba 770 has both acoustic and optical sensors to get more accurate readings.

Also, it has dual HEPA air filters to improve air circulation by capturing small debris down to 0.3 microns. Roomba 770 brings a more complete package which includes two Auto Virtual Walls, two brush cleaning tools, a remote control, and an instructional DVD.

Introduction

The name iRobot has almost become synonymous with robotic vacuum cleaners. This global manufacturer has over the years produced products that have taken cleaning to a whole new level. They have been quite a life-saver, particularly for those with busy lives.

However, due to the ever-increasing competition, the company decided to improve on its previous products. And the next thing you know, it came up with new and improved models. Among the most notable ones are iRobot Roomba 780 and iRobot Roomba 880.

Advanced Cliff Detecting Technology

Both models feature various similarities in terms of design and performance. These vacuum cleaners incorporate an advanced cliff detecting technology that serves to prevent them from falling, especially when cleaning on stairs.

The wall following technology enables them to clean effectively in areas, such as corners and along the edges. They have the ability to automatically adjust between floor types to offer maximum cleaning. They incorporate iAdapt Responsive Navigation Technology that allows easy cleaning in those hard-to-reach places.

Dirt Detect

The Dirt Detect Series 2 provides a more thorough and consistent cleaning. This is made possible by sensors that automatically detect pet hair, dust and other debris so that the cleaner can concentrate more on the dirtiest places.

The filtration mechanism is also similar as they both utilize the HEPA Filters. These cleaners can be scheduled to carry out a maximum of seven cleaning sessions within a one week period.

Some Differences

AeroForce™ Performance Cleaning System

However, these vacuum cleaners differ in a number of ways. Their cleaning mechanism is virtually different. The 880 utilizes AeroForce Performance Cleaning Mechanism.

Combining the power of AeroForce Extractors and airflow acceleration, the system provides you with ultimate cleaning power that is virtually maintenance-free.

This enables the cleaner to eliminate 50 percent more dirt, pet hair, dust, allergens and debris from all types of floors as compared to previous Roomba Models.

Here’s how AeroForce works:

Tangle-Free AeroForce Extractors: Dual extractors grab and break down dirt and debris from any floor type with no hair tangles for you.

Airflow Accelerator: Creates a sealed channel that concentrates airflow, drawing in more debris.

High-Efficiency Vacuum: Provides a 5X improvement in air power than previous Roomba generations.

AeroVac Series II

On the other hand, the 780 utilizes the AeroVac Series II cleaning mechanism. This is a three-stage cleaning system that makes use of an advanced cleaning head.

Roomba 780’s cleaning features include: Advanced Cleaning Head, AeroVac™ Series 2 Bin and Dual HEPA Air Filters.

Battery Life

Despite the fact that both cleaners run on batteries, the 880 offers a more extended battery life. Compared to the batteries incorporated in previous Roomba models, it has the ability to deliver twice as many cleaning cycles.

Accessories

Each cleaner incorporates various accessories that make the cleaning task even much easier. iRobot Roomba 880 comes with 2 virtual wall lighthouses and an extra-large HEPA Filter and it is almost maintenance free.

The 780 comes with 2 Virtual Wall Lighthouses, Extra Brush Set, Extra Filter Set, Round Brush Cleaning Tool and Flat Brush Cleaning Tool.
