Introduction

Garmin vivofit is one of the older models of activity trackers in the market. There have been plenty of iterations built on the features of vivofit including its two successors: vivofit 2 and vivofit 3.

Form factor remains the same despite differences in screen size and minor addition of activity tracking ability.

Garmin vivofit 2

Similar to its predecessor, vivofit 2 is wrist-based activity tracking device that measures number of steps taken during a day, calories burned, distance travelled, and hours of sleep. Some of the most noticeable improvements over the previous model include the addition of stopwatch function, backlight, and audible alerts.

Backlight probably involves only minor hardware upgrade, but thank to this the watch is now constantly readable even under bright sunlight. Backlight allows you to check the time and your progress more easily. The screen is at 1-inch x 0.39-inch, making the device remains non-bulky yet capable of displaying readable numbers.

There is only one button that controls all the functions. Garmin does that by assigning different combination of pressing and holding to access features. Tapping once scrolls data screen between time, date, and current tracking statistics.

Pressing and holding the button enables the backlight, while holding the button opens access to additional functions including stopwatch, synchronization with apps, and smartphone pairing. It is compatible with ANT+ heart rate strap to track beats per minute as well.

Garmin vivofit 2 does not have GPS, therefore its tracking functions rely on the on-board accelerometer. A popular advantage of vivofit is the possibility to switch the band with ease. You can pop out the main unit and slide it into the new band without any difficulty.

Garmin offers a variety of band colors including camouflage and a couple of special editions as well. Although the activity tracker is a capable stand-alone device, you can pair it with compatible smartphone apps to get more detailed analysis of your performance.

The vivofit 2 works with iOS and Android phones by using Garmin Connect mobile app. You can further upload your statistics stored on the phone to Garmin Connect online community platform to join challenges and share data. Some third-party apps also work well with the tracker.

Another interesting feature is that the step counter does not limit the minimum goal to 10,000 steps. The tracker actually learns your daily achievement and determines new goal every day. The goal increases as you reach a milestone and is reduced when you fail to match yesterday’s achievement.

It also has inactivity bar that appears and builds up after an hour of inactivity. You can reset the bar to zero by walking around for a few minutes.

The highlight of vivofit 2 is battery life. Instead of using rechargeable battery, Garmin has decided to use two CR1632 replaceable coin cells which provide power for about a year. Since the device is designed to be day-to-day tracker and intended for continuous use (even when you’re sleeping), it is good that there is no need to recharge it.

Considering the fact that it also has 5 ATM water rating, Garmin vivofit 2 is ideal fitness tracker for daily activities. Without rechargeable power, you will need to open the case to replace batteries when they run out of power; it is a bit of compromise but you get a recharge-free device in return.

Garmin vivofit 3

Several changes have been made to vivofit 2 and they are all manifested in the vivofit 3. There is a slight difference in terms of design with smaller display. The bands now have more dynamic patterns and colors too.

Auto Activity Detection

Biggest improvements are on the inside with the additions of Auto Activity Detection. The idea is that vivofit 3 recognizes different types of exercises including running, swimming, cycling, and elliptical. When uploaded to Garmin Connect via smartphone app, each activity is represented in separate statistic.

Intensity Minutes

Another difference is Intensity Minutes. The idea behind this feature is to encourage you to perform at least 150 minutes of physical activities in a week, as recommended by American Heart Association and World Health Organization.

In terms of activity tracking functionalities, both devices are similar. However, vivofit 3 has more efficient power management because it has the same 1-year battery life by using only one replaceable CR1632 coin cell.

The basic functions of an activity tracker are to measure steps taken, calories burned, distance traveled, and sleep duration. Most modern models improve the functionality by adding an activity bar, which increases in length when you stop moving for a while and decreases as you engage in physical activity, and automatic goals based on yesterday’s activity.

Garmin has been in the activity tracker market for quite a while now; the original vivofit was the first in the lineup, but the company has made a number of newer models to improve that including vivofit 2 and vivosmart HR.

Garmin vivofit 2

The original vivofit can be considered the bare minimum of what an activity tracker is, and vivofit 2 improves the basic functionality by adding several new features such as stopwatch, audible alerts, and backlight. Most features remain the same including the automatic daily goals.

Step Count Goals

Number of steps taken during a day varies based on fitness level, and vivofit 2 monitors you actual activity and counts steps to determine your goals. When first setting up, you can select your own target step count goals.

If you manage to meet that goal, vivofit 2 automatically increases the number as the next goal for you to achieve tomorrow. If you step less than the determined goal, it reduces the number.

Its small sunlight-readable LCD screen is constantly on, making it easier to check time or see how many steps you’ve taken at a glance without pressing a button. Garmin vivofit 2 has only one button located on the strap.

All functions are accessed and configured using this button; tapping once will scroll through data pages (activity data, time, and date), pressing and holding enable the backlight, and holding it long enough opens additional functions including stopwatch, smartphone-pairing, and app syncing.

Stopwatch function is not a simple additional timing feature, but it can also measure distance, steps, and calories from a single training session.

ANT+ Heart Rate Strap

When paired with ANT+ heart rate strap, vivofit 2 monitors heart beat per minute, too. Every activity data is calculated using a built-in accelerometer.

Batteries

Powered by two replaceable coin batteries, vivofit 2 stays on for more than a year. It can withstand pressures equivalent to 50 meters depth, allowing you to wear it all day long even during swimming or taking a shower.

Garmin Connect

Without having to recharge for a year or more, it is possible to keep on measuring your activity level 24/7. This activity tracker is compatible with Garmin Connect Mobile app available for Android and iOS devices. Garmin vivofit 2 can automatically sync to a smartphone and upload activity data to Garmin Connect online community where you can track your achievements in more details or compete with others.

Gamin vivosmart HR

Within less than a year of vivofit 2 official introduction in January 2015, Garmin brought the vivosmart HR in late October of the same year.

Touchscreen and Built-In Wrist-Based Heart Rate Monitor.

The vivosmart HR is a more complete activity tracker with several additional functions including intensity minutes and smartphone connectivity features. In terms of hardware, vivosmart HR is better for two things: touchscreen and built-in wrist-based heart rate monitor.

Intensity Minutes

Intensity minutes are based on the recommended moderate exercise of 30 minutes every day. The vivosmart HR simplifies it by using only 150 minutes per week, but this is user-adjustable.

Smartphone Connectivity

Smartphone connectivity includes notifications and music control. When paired with a compatible smartphone, the activity tracker displays notifications you receive such as texts, emails, and basically all apps on your phone.

Control Music Player App and VIRB camera

This feature can be turned off on the vivosmart HR setting. The screen is small, but enough to read information about the notification and its contents. It does not have the capability of storing music files, but it can control music player app. In addition, vivosmart HR can be used as a remote control for VIRB camera.

Barometric

Besides counting steps, calories, and sleep duration, vivosmart HR is equipped with barometric to count stairs you’ve climbed.

Wrist-Based Heart Rate Monitor

The biggest addition is wrist-based heart-rate monitor so the monitoring is constantly on without the need for heart rate strap. It can even act as the heart rate strap when paired with other compatible Garmin devices. Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery, vivosmart HR stays on for up to 5 days on a single charge.

Introduction

The original Garmin vivofit was the company’s first attempt to get into the market of fitness tracker and the updated of the vivofit is called vivosmart. Now the company has the vivosmart HR to complete the line of upgrade.

Garmin vivosmart HR

Compared to the original vivosmart, the vivosmart HR (vivosmart 2nd edition) version has a number of improvements in many respects. Although it is still pretty much a strip of silicone with display, the design is now dominated by more substantial screen on the front and the buckle is more watch-like instead of wrap-around type.

Sizes

The vivosmart HR comes in two different band sizes including regular and extra large. Regular size will fit any wrist measuring up to 187mm, while the Extra Large one fits wrist up to 224mm.

Display

Three different band colors are available; black comes with both regular and extra large sizes, but blue and purple come only in regular. In the middle of the silicone strap, there is an inch of touchscreen display that produces 160 x 68 pixels resolution.

Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery

It is an OLED display, so you expect good visibility even under bright sunlight. Powered by rechargeable lithium ion battery, vivosmart HR can keep on running for about 5 days on a single charge.

Touch and Swipe

A button sits on the top right, but vivosmart HR’s operation is based on touch and swipe gestures. Swiping up and down will cycle through information screens including heart rate, weather, notifications, calories burned and more.

Pressing the button opens setting where you can activate/deactivate features such as Bluetooth, alarm, as well as synchronization. Deeper settings are accessible under the gear icon which opens options for language, display time out, clock format, factory reset, and heart rate functionality.

Tracking Function

Sitting at the top of the range in Garmin’s fitness trackers line, the vivosmart HR does most things that its predecessors can. Common tracking functions such as step counter, auto goal, sleep monitoring and inactivity bar are available.

It is the additional functionality that makes vivosmart HR better than its older siblings. Besides the usual fitness tracking ability, it offers smartphone connectivity to control music player and display notifications.

Built-In Heart Rate Sensor

One of the best things about vivosmart HR is the built-in heart rate sensor on the back of the unit. It measures heart rate 24/7 without the needs for additional heart rate strap accessory. This built-in sensor is Garmin’s own technology, so it is not licensed from any other company. Based on the heart rate information, the fitness tracker provides more data about calories burned and workout intensity.

More Features

In addition to measuring step, calories, inactivity, and sleep, vivosmart HR is equipped with barometric altimeter to figure out the number of floors climbed. Another improvement is called Intensity Minutes; the goal is to get at least 150 minutes for a week, and the fitness tracker gives you information on how many more minutes you should be exercising to achieve the goal. The idea behind this is to engage you in physical activities for at least 30 minutes for 5 days a week.

Smart Notifications

When paired with a compatible smartphone (Android, iOS, and Windows 10 Phone) via Bluetooth Smart, vivosmart HR displays notifications received on the smartphone. Notifications appear on the vivosmart HR’s screen accompanied by a vibration alert.

It can also control smartphone’s music player or trigger an alert in case you forget where you put the phone. More than that, it can control VIRB camera as well. For more detailed information about activity progress, you can use it in combination with the free Garmin Connect App. It continuously synchronizes with the phone and records the data including 24/7 heart rate sensor.

Garmin vivosmart

As the predecessor, vivosmart is much simpler fitness tracker but it does everything that it sets out to do. The original vivosmart also measures steps, monitors sleep, times your inactivity, and it automatically determines goal based on your current progress. Similar to most modern fitness trackers, the vivosmart can act like a typical smartwatch by displaying notifications from a connected phone on its own screen.

Biggest Difference Between vivosmart and vivosmart HR

The biggest difference between vivosmart and vivosmart HR is that the latter has built-in heart rate sensor, whereas the former requires a separate heart rate strap to make proper calculation.

The predecessor also lacks stairs counter and intensity minutes. The vivosmart do support cycling speed sensor and ability to connect to external ANT+ HR strap whereas the vivosmart HR do not support those two features.

The battery in the vivosmart can stand for about 7 days on a single charge whereas the vivosmart HR for about 5 days.

Introduction

Before smartwatch became a popular trend, fitness tracker had already established a place in wearable market.

Although the basic features of nearly all stand-alone activity trackers (as opposed to apps installed on smartphone) are almost exactly the same, manufacturers separate their products from the competitors by making distinguishable designs, advanced compatibility features with computer, online communities, and so on.

Garmin, as one of the most popular names in smart-wearable devices, also came up with the new vivofit 2. It was announced in January 2015, so it is still relatively new compared to the Garmin vivosmart which had been released 4 months earlier.

Garmin vivofit 2

Unlike the currently popular smartwatch, Garmin vivofit 2 is a stand-alone activity tracker without any smartwatch-based features such as push notifications from a connected smartphone.

It can be paired with a smartphone indeed, but mainly to update statistics concerning your activity (compatible mobile device at Garmin.com/BLE). The vivofit 2 is basically a follow-up of the original vivofit, bringing only some minor updates in terms of both functionality and hardware.

Just like its older brother, the vivofit 2 measures several different statistics including steps takes, heart rate, calories burned, and distance travelled for outdoor workout without the needs for foot pod thanks to its accelerometer.

There is also an auto goal feature which learns your daily activity and automatically sets a goal for you to achieve in the next day. A move-bar to tell you to walk after 1-hour of inactivity and sleep monitoring feature are as well provided.

The basics are all covered, but vivofit 2 brings a handful of improvement such as all-day automatic sync with phone to record your statistic; it is no longer necessary to manually sync and update the data.

You can pair vivofit 2 with heart-rate monitor to get more accurate reading of calories-burned computation based on heart rate zone. Garmin vivofit 2 is powered by two replaceable coin cells which provide up to 1 year of power before they need replacement.

Garmin vivosmart with Smart Notification

The vivosmart can be regarded as the more sophisticated version of vivofit 2. In terms of activity-tracking features, both of them are exactly the same with a set of functionality to measure data such as steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, distance traveled, sleep quality, and time of inactivity.

Automatic all-day synchronization with smartphone is as well available. However, vivosmart brings smart notification feature too. It generally combines the basic features of activity tracker and smartwatch into one unit only.

The smart notification feature allows vivosmart to vibrate anytime you receive notifications from an app installed on your phone such as text messages, emails, or even phone call.

The good thing is that the smartphone app delivers various settings with which you can connect or disconnect more apps. You can even swipe the screen to read more information about the notification.

Synchronization with phone does not end with notification, but it also can control music playback and ring your phone in case you have problem finding it.

Additionally, vivosmart provides on-screen data for distance, calories, steps, heart rate, VIRB camera control, music playback control, etc. Garmin vivosmart is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery to provide enough power for up to 7 days.

Introduction To The New Garmin vivofit 2

Garmin has just recently announced an upgrade of the original vivofit, and it is simply called vivofit 2. It has all the features originally found on its predecessor and some new additions including activity timer and audible inactivity alert.

In fact, the major upgrade is the appearance including the striking leather, stainless steel, and even Jonathan Adler design. Some features you will get from the newly announced fitness band are as follows.

Activity Tracker

As it should be, vivofit 2 keeps track of your activity including steps count, calories burned, distance traveled, and heart rate. There is also Sleep Mode which will monitor how long you sleep and how well you rest.

Every statistic is displayed on its always-on LCD screen, and there is a red bar to indicate your level of inactivity. The display now has backlight so it is more readable.

The overall dimension is even exactly the same with the original vivofit measuring at 21 mm W x 10.5 mm H; it weighs 25.5 grams. The length varies depending on the band sizes.

Garmin vivofit 2 is powered by two replaceable coin cells battery that lasts for more than 1 year. This fitness band also has 5 ATM water rating, meaning it can withstand the pressure equivalent to 50 meters depth.

It is suitable for activities such as shallow snorkeling, surface swimming, and other similar activities; it should not be a problem to wear it when you are taking a shower.

It is available in 4 different colors including Black, White, Navy, and Pink. A bundled option with Heart Rate Monitor is available for both Black and White variants.

Inactivity Alert

It still has the same inactivity alert as the original vivofit. Time of inactivity is displayed as a red bar on the LCD; when it gets full, vivofit 2 will produce an alert which basically tells you to engage in physical activity.

The red bar will be full across the screen in approximately an hour of inactivity, but you can reverse it by simply walking for a few minutes.

The big difference is that now the alert is audible instead of a simple vibration. However, it is still possible to deactivate the beeping sound and use the old-style vibration instead.

Auto Goal

Garmin vivofit 2 is able to learn your activity habits and automatically assign goal for you. As soon as you meet the personalized goal, this fitness tracker will set a more demanding one for the next day.

In addition, there is also an activity timer feature with which you can set the fitness band to time your activity, allowing you to focus better on the workout.

Garmin Connect

Similar to most Garmin devices, vivofit 2 is supported perfectly by Garmin Connect with which you can access your statistics more clearly and compare them to others’.

There will be challenges on the online community and badges to motivate you better. Vivofit 2 has auto sync feature that sends statistic automatically to computer.

When connected with MyFitnessPal app at the same time, you will get more accurate reading about calories burned and consumed.

Introduction

Earlier this year of 2014, Garmin announced its sleek fitness tracker called vivovit. And now Garmin introduced the new Garmin vivosmart,  which brought plenty of good improvements over its predecessor.

Vivosmart has all the features originally found in the vivovit, but the new device is also equipped with capabilities to act as a simple smart watch too, for example displaying notifications from smartphones and compatibility with both iOS and Android platforms.

Display

One of the interesting improvements is that vivosmart has OLED display instead of the more common LCD type. The screen is only 1.35-inch W x 0.14-inch H, and it has 128 x 16 pixels resolution.

Garmin vivosmart has 5 ATM water rating, allowing you to wear it safely even when swimming or taking a shower. Interestingly, the screen is always off unless you tap it, you lift your hand to see it, or it receives any notification or produces alerts.

Vivosmart is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and it can last for up to 7 days before it needs a recharge. It is available in 5 different band colors including Black, Purple, Berry, Blue, and Slate; each is available in large and small sizes as well.

Smart Notifications

With Bluetooth connectivity, vivosmart can sync with compatible smartphones to display notifications for text messages, emails, phone calls, and more.

The good thing is that the OLED screen can also display the contents of messages when tapped or swiped. Notifications are not limited to standard features on your phone, but vivosmart even receives notifications from certain games too.

By using the Connect Mobile App, you can even configure the vivosmart to wirelessly control music player on the phone. It displays basic controls such as play, stop, next, back, and volume adjustment. Even better, the app can sync with MyFitnesPal app, so it is possible to track your calories intake and how many you burn.

Tap and Swipe

All functions in Garmin’s vivosmart are controllable by only tapping and swiping.  This is basically a fitness tracker, so you get statistics such as calories burned, step taken, distance travelled, heart rate, and time. You can swipe right or left to change the display and tap on an icon to see more options.

Time to Move

There is a built-in activity sensor in the vivosmart which also functions as inactivity reminder. After an hour of inactivity, this fitness tracker will vibrate and remind you to move. After several minutes of walking or moving, the timer will automatically reset.

Another good thing is the personalized goal feature. Garmin’s vivosmart learns your habit and routine activities to automatically adjust a personalized goal. When the goal is achieved, it will continue to set a higher goal, requiring you to be gradually more active.

Built-in alarm & Sleep Mode

Vibration alert feature is available in vivosmart. Set up your vivosmart built-in alarm and vivosmart with gentle vibration will alert you, so your bracelet can actually wake you up without disturbing anyone else.

With Garmin vivosmart you set the sleep mode at bedtime and monitor your rest. And on your Garmin Connect page, you can view your total sleep hours as well as periods of restful sleep and movement.

Garmin vivovit – The Fitness and Wellness Tracker

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusby feather

Garmin vivovit purpleAn Introduction To Garmin vivovit

Garmin has always been known for its GPS-enabled devices from satellite navigation systems for vehicles to wristwatches for runners and professional athletes.

Garmin has also tried to answer demands for more casual consumers with activity tracker device by releasing Garmin Vivofit earlier this year of 2014. This wristwatch is basically Garmin’s attempts to make some trade-offs between features and design as well as features and price.

The result is a simple wristwatch with the ability to measure number of steps, calories burned, distance traveled, and time of the day.

vivokeeper, vivofit Accessory

You can order your free vivokeeper security device to keep your vivofit on your wrist. Sign up at Garmin vivokeeper.

Hardware

In the hardware section, Garmin Vivofit is comprised of two parts with the main unit is actually a separate hardware from the strap. It is safe to say that the strap is interchangeable, and the package even includes two straps of different sizes, small and large.

There are six different colors available including Black, Blue, Red, Slate, Teal, and Purple. A USB ANT Stick and manual are as well included. The Vivofit Bundle variant includes a Heart Rate Monitor, but you can also purchase this optional accessory separately.

This small activity tracker only weighs 25.5 grams and is powered by two replaceable coin cells. The batteries should be able to run the device for more than one year.

Vivofit is made of water-resistant material, so you can wear it all the time even when taking a shower without worries.

Personalized Goals

First things first, Vivofit is the only activity tracker that welcomes users with personalized goal, tracks progress, and reminds users to be more active. The device learns the user’s activity level before it assigns daily goal.

The default is 7,500 steps so when you surpass it, Vivofit will increase this goal for the next day. In the event of inactivity such as prolonged sitting, a read bar appears on the LCD and builds after an hour. You will have to move for some minutes to reset the bar.

When paired with a compatible Heart Rate monitor, Vivofit will record heart rate data during any activity such as cardio training, fitness activities, sport games, etc.

Besides setting up number of steps as goals, Vivofit also counts calories burned, time, and distance travelled. The display for each of those features is fairly simple with numbers and symbols, but you will be able to get more details about your progress with Garmin Connect app.

By syncing your device with this app, your data will be displayed in details including every progress and goal. When you plug the included USB ANT stick into a computer USB port, it will transfer the stored data seamlessly from Vivofit.

For mobile devices, you can use Garmin Connect Mobile App, which is freely downloadable. The Garmin’s online community even offers challenges with virtual badges to keep you motivated.

Sleep Mode

As an activity tracker, Garmin Vivofit is best used constantly. It tracks your progress 24/7 even during bed time. There is a sleep mode option which will count sleep hours and analyze sleep quality.

You can press and hold the big button down until the LCD displays “Sleep”, but the device can actually switch to sleep mode automatically by analyzing your movement.

When you wake up in the morning, Vivofit will display how long it has been in sleep mode and your movement intensity (in “low” to “high” scale).
