Garmin vivofit is one of the older models of activity trackers in the market. There have been plenty of iterations built on the features of vivofit including its two successors: vivofit 2 and vivofit 3.
Form factor remains the same despite differences in screen size and minor addition of activity tracking ability.
Garmin vivofit 2
Similar to its predecessor, vivofit 2 is wrist-based activity tracking device that measures number of steps taken during a day, calories burned, distance travelled, and hours of sleep. Some of the most noticeable improvements over the previous model include the addition of stopwatch function, backlight, and audible alerts.
Backlight probably involves only minor hardware upgrade, but thank to this the watch is now constantly readable even under bright sunlight. Backlight allows you to check the time and your progress more easily. The screen is at 1-inch x 0.39-inch, making the device remains non-bulky yet capable of displaying readable numbers.
There is only one button that controls all the functions. Garmin does that by assigning different combination of pressing and holding to access features. Tapping once scrolls data screen between time, date, and current tracking statistics.
Pressing and holding the button enables the backlight, while holding the button opens access to additional functions including stopwatch, synchronization with apps, and smartphone pairing. It is compatible with ANT+ heart rate strap to track beats per minute as well.
Garmin vivofit 2 does not have GPS, therefore its tracking functions rely on the on-board accelerometer. A popular advantage of vivofit is the possibility to switch the band with ease. You can pop out the main unit and slide it into the new band without any difficulty.
Garmin offers a variety of band colors including camouflage and a couple of special editions as well. Although the activity tracker is a capable stand-alone device, you can pair it with compatible smartphone apps to get more detailed analysis of your performance.
The vivofit 2 works with iOS and Android phones by using Garmin Connect mobile app. You can further upload your statistics stored on the phone to Garmin Connect online community platform to join challenges and share data. Some third-party apps also work well with the tracker.
Another interesting feature is that the step counter does not limit the minimum goal to 10,000 steps. The tracker actually learns your daily achievement and determines new goal every day. The goal increases as you reach a milestone and is reduced when you fail to match yesterday’s achievement.
It also has inactivity bar that appears and builds up after an hour of inactivity. You can reset the bar to zero by walking around for a few minutes.
The highlight of vivofit 2 is battery life. Instead of using rechargeable battery, Garmin has decided to use two CR1632 replaceable coin cells which provide power for about a year. Since the device is designed to be day-to-day tracker and intended for continuous use (even when you’re sleeping), it is good that there is no need to recharge it.
Considering the fact that it also has 5 ATM water rating, Garmin vivofit 2 is ideal fitness tracker for daily activities. Without rechargeable power, you will need to open the case to replace batteries when they run out of power; it is a bit of compromise but you get a recharge-free device in return.
Garmin vivofit 3
Several changes have been made to vivofit 2 and they are all manifested in the vivofit 3. There is a slight difference in terms of design with smaller display. The bands now have more dynamic patterns and colors too.
Auto Activity Detection
Biggest improvements are on the inside with the additions of Auto Activity Detection. The idea is that vivofit 3 recognizes different types of exercises including running, swimming, cycling, and elliptical. When uploaded to Garmin Connect via smartphone app, each activity is represented in separate statistic.
Another difference is Intensity Minutes. The idea behind this feature is to encourage you to perform at least 150 minutes of physical activities in a week, as recommended by American Heart Association and World Health Organization.
In terms of activity tracking functionalities, both devices are similar. However, vivofit 3 has more efficient power management because it has the same 1-year battery life by using only one replaceable CR1632 coin cell.
